Vehicles of G.A.R.D. Hamburg (Gemeinnützige Ambulanz- und Rettungsdienst GmbH, formerly also known as Ambulanz Hamburg), one of Germany’s largest providers of private ambulance services, now part of the Falck group.
The company provides non-emergency ambulance and full emergency medical services.
Krankentransportwagen (KTW) – Ambulances
Note that the emergency ambulance in the background of the image above belonged to Notfallrettung Detlef Schlick, and that the (magnetic) taxi sign was added to the G.A.R.D. ambulance by some British colleagues during the night (at the National Ambulance Rally in Lincoln, England).
Rettungswagen (RTW) – Emergency Ambulances
Images from the 1990s, taken a few days after the company had these new generation Mercedes ambulances delivered.
A virtually identical emergency ambulance, but the diagonal stripe and other markings are in blue instead of the usual mint-green. This was unique to the Rettungswache Bergedorf (“Bergedorf Ambulance Station”, formerly the independent Borrink ambulance service):
Notarztwagen (NAW) – Emergency Ambulance with Doctor
First livery and marked for “Ambulanz Hamburg”, with Wolfsburg numberplate (the vehicle was brand new at the time, not yet re-registered from the Volkswagen works):
Note that this vehicle was fitted with magnetic “Notarzt” signs when staffed with a doctor, otherwise it could be used as a normal emergency ambulance.
Notarzteinsatzfahrzeug (NEF) – Emergency Doctor Car
Behindertentransportwagen (BTW) – Wheelchair Ambulance
Einsatzleitwagen (ELW) – Control Unit
This could double up as a make-shift camper van …
Personenwagen (PKW) – Utility Cars

Used by home care services:
Note that the Volkswagen RTW in the background might be an old Aicher Ambulanz Union (Munich) vehicle.
This was never in active service, but bought from a large industrial plant as an “eyecatcher” at exhibitions only:
Used during stunt shows as a “moving advertisement”:
Please note that these are scans from old 35mm slides in my archives, with resultant deterioration in colours and sharpness.
